Jiu Jitsu " An art of weaponless self-defense developed in Japan that uses throws, holds, and blows and derives added power from the attacker's own weight and strength."
History: The art of Jiu Jitsu began with Mitsuyo Maeda(an expert Japanese Judoka and member of Kodokan). Maeda was sent overseas by Kano Jigoro to spread the art to the world because he was one of the five top groundwork experts of his time. Maeda left Japan in 1904 and visited many different countries giving "jiu-do" demonstrations and accepting challenges from notorious wrestlers, boxers, savate fighters and various other martial artists before arriving in Brazil on November 14, 1914. Maeda eventually met an influential businessman named Gastao Gracie who helped him get Jiu Jitsu established. In 1916 Gracie's 14 year-old son Carlos watched a demonstration by Maeda at the Teatro de Paz (Theatre of Peace) and decided to learn the art. Maeda accepted Carlos as a student, and Carlos went on to become a great exponent of the art and ultimately, with his younger brother Helio became the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Background: Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and fighting on the ground. It is a relatively new martial art, and was developed from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo. This martial art promotes the principle that a smaller or weaker person can defend himself against a bigger and stronger attacker by using leverage and technique. Jiu Jitsu teaches a variety of joint-locks as well as chokeholds to defeat the other person (or "tap them out"). Founders: Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie, Helio Gracie Origin: Japan, but developed extensively in Brazil Jiu Jitsu Ranking System:
